Your Story Matters: Theatre for Community in Practice with the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal

Abstract

“Applied Theatre” is a useful umbrella term for all committed to the power of theatre in making a difference to the human life span. It is played in spaces that are not traditionally defined as theatre buildings. The performances include participants who may or may not be skilled in theatre arts and audiences who have a vested interest in the issue taken up by the performance or are members of the community. One category of Applied Theatre is “Theatre for Community.” This theatre provides a platform for individuals to come together, share in stories that unite them, and explore their differences. I set out to answer the following questions: Can this work? What are the challenges surrounding Applied Theatre in practice? What are the advantages? The following is a paper discussing my work as a first time teaching artist working with teens ages eleven through fifteen at the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal.
