The Common Data Set (CDS) is a collaborative effort between the higher education community and publishers to improve the quality and accuracy of publicly available information on colleges and universities as well as to reduce the reporting burden on institutions. Questions and definitions used by the US Department of Education in its college surveys are a guide in the development of CDS items. Common Data Set items undergo broad review by many constituencies before being adopted.
