Ames is the author of five articles for The Harvard Business Review on strategic planning and marketing for industrial and technical firms. He co-authored Managerial Marketing: The Ultimate Advantage, used by several leading companies, and Managerial Marketing for Industrial Firms. A third book, Market Driven Management, was recently published. Ames is a director of AM International, Inc., Diamond Shamrock Refining and Marketing Company, M.A. Hanna Company, LTV Corporation, The Progressive Corporation, Warner-Lambert Company, and the Cleveland Center for Economic Education, as well as several others. He holds the M.B.A. degree from Harvard University's graduate School of Business. He married Joyce Eichorn, a 1949 alumna of IWU, and is a member of Theta Chi.
