“Go forth and do well, but even more go forth and do good.” Minor Myers, jr. first spoke these words during his 1993 commencement speech featured here. He continued to offer this advice to every graduating class. "Do well, do good" has become a catchphrase for Illinois Wesleyan ever since.

Minor Myers, Jr. became the 17th President of IWU in 1989. He was an alumnus of Carleton and Princeton and taught for 16 years at Connecticut College, where he wrote five books and headed the board of the local museum. Before arriving at IWU, Myers had spent five years as Provost, Dean of Faculty, and Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Minor Myers, jr. passed away in 2003.
