Abstract

“Baggage Claim” is a collection of poetry written during a period of and in response to a long-distance relationship between the poet and her partner, who is a South Korean citizen currently residing there for his mandatory military service. The poems also depict their interracial relationship with its challenges and adventures. These aspects are all explored through form and theme. Furthermore, the poems reflect both visually and auditorily how distance, language, and time impact a relationship, through the good, the bad, and the 별로인 것 (byeollo-in geot). By writing in both languages that the two speak, English and Korean, the poet creates a collection of poetry that acts as a love letter to loyalty in spite of the 6000 miles of separation.
