Primary Source Analysis
Annually, amidst the commitment to the academics of the school year, students begin to devise a plan to study abroad during the May term at Illinois Wesleyan. A time to refine their passions, experience a new culture, and enjoy the excitements of another country. In May of 2003, nursing students traveled to Lamu, Kenya. Lamu is a small town on Lamu Island, a part of the Lamu Archipelago. Illinois Wesleyan sent roughly 20 students and a few professors some 19 hours over the Atlantic Ocean. The students toured all around Kenya, stopping for pictures at the Lamu Medical Clinic and the King Fahd Lamu District Hospital.
The students experienced a completely different culture on a different side of the world. With all of its diverse perspectives and cultures, they were able to get involved in the practice of medicine in a different continent. These pictures illustrate the trips that not only these students embarked on but many other students throughout the years. They demonstrate the resilience of nurses to advance the practices of their studies and work to learn more about the medical methods of a different country. The idea of immersing themselves in a new culture to learn was greatly beneficial to these students. This trip would mark the beginning of a long-standing relationship with the nation of Kenya and Illinois Wesleyan University.
