A View from the Trenches: Current Digitization Activities of Illinois Academic Libraries

Publication Date

March 2012

Abstract

This poster presents selected results of a survey of digitization and digital collection creation practices conducted by the Digital Collections Users’ Group (DCUG), a committee sponsored by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). The survey was conducted to increase DCUG’s understanding of the efforts of CARLI member libraries (including reasons why libraries might not be pursuing digital collections), and to help DCUG create documentation and training materials to better serve the needs of libraries creating digital collections. The results provide a snapshot of current activities being conducted by Illinois academic libraries related to the digitization of primary source materials and the curation of online digital collections, including how digitization projects are staffed, what formats are being digitized, what metadata schemas and software applications are being used, and plans for future projects.
