Award Description

William A. Brown of Birmingham, Mich., graduated with a degree in biology from Ilinois Wesleyan and was admitted as an early acceptance into the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine prior to his senior year at IWU. At the University of Illinois he received his doctorate of veterinary medicine with honors as well as an honorary bachelor's in veterinary science. He did his clinical training in internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, neurology, critical care, emergency and surgery at North Carolina State. His residency in veterinary cardiology came from the University of California, Davis, before returning to Illinois to do cardiology research. Today Brown is chief executive officer of Veterinary Cardiology Consultants, a cardiology-only veterinary practice in Novi, Mich. VCC provides cardiac diagnostic testing, cardiac critical care and remote consulting services to veterinarians in general practice (2,000 patients annuaUy). In addition, VCC provides professional services to several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. They also provide clinical training in small animal cardiology to senior veterinary students from Michigan State University. In addition, Brown currently serves or has served as a consultant for The Detroit Zoological Park, Leader Dogs, Paws With A Cause, Bayer AG, Merck and Synbiotics. Brown has given dozens of professional presentations and is published extensively. He is a member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, where he has served as chairman of the Cardiology Examination Committee, chairman of the Cardiology Research Committee and president of the local chapter of that organization. Bill and his wife, Alyson, are parents of Olivia and Alexander.
