For this year's essay contest, students were asked to respond to the following prompt related to Jenny Nordberg's book, The Underground Girls of Kabul: Even though women represent over 50% of the world’s population, women’s opportunities to lead self-directed and meaningful lives and make strong leadership contributions in their communities are challenged by cultural expectations, religious ideologies, and political restrictions. Do you think the gender expectations placed on men and women that were illustrated in The Underground Girls of Kabul hold true in your own culture? If not, why not? If so, how and what steps can be taken to eliminate them?

Abstract
