For this year's contest, students were asked to respond to the following prompt: In Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates states, “Americans believe in the reality of ‘race’ as a defined indubitable feature of the natural world…But race is the child of racism, not the father” (p. 7). Discuss Coates’s definition of race and how this compels us to think about the history of race and racism in the United States and globally. How has your conception of your own racial identity affected your views on these issues?
