Abstract

Three Preludes for solo piano (2020) is a condensed work from Christopher Callahan. Although this piece is short, the compositional process was quite extensive in their creation. This piece consists of three short movements that are intended as "Beginnings" of possible longer pieces. This piece is heavily inspired by intermezzi by Johannes Brahms particularly by his compositional process. Each work has a set melodic motive, a small group of a few pitches, which are explored and expanded upon during the course of each movement. Although the movements themselves do not share any similarities, the idea of these Preludes that is constant is that more music will eventually be written from the concepts present.
