Abstract
Creating a positive classroom environment is essential for the social development as well as academic success of students. In order to have a positive classroom environment, students need to feel safe and respected by each other and by the teacher. Students who do not feel safe and valued will find it impossible to focus on academics or their relationships with others (Miller & Pedro, 2006). The purpose of this study is to examine the effects that social emotional learning (SEL) and positive relationship-building strategies have on elementary students. SEL is an education practice that integrates social and emotional skills into the curriculum. It helps students better understand their emotions, become more self-aware, and develop empathy for others around them (CASEL, 1997). This self-study was conducted in a first grade classroom. Class data collected include field notes, lesson plans, and anecdotal notes. The results of this study suggest that with frequent SEL and kindness activities and lessons, students' behaviors and relationships towards each other improved from the beginning of the study.
