Abstract

Kendra Duquette is a Functional Medicine practitioner in Bloomington-Normal, practicing from the Preventative Health Institution and the Duquette Functional Medicine clinic. Duquette focuses on coaching her patients to treat and prevent chronic illness through various preventive health and Functional Medicine programs. “The Cure is the Cause” is her motto in helping people pursue happiness and fulfillment. My research with Duquette focuses on how she teaches her patients to address their environment, diet, and lifestyle choices in order to improve their health through providing them with tools, resources, and education. I conducted research with Duquette by participating in ethnographic interviews, observing her preventive health online programs, and through visiting her clinic. These experiences are captured through photographs, produced in conjunction with Duquette, to try and encapsulate her coaching process and philosophies. Through such research, Duquette highlights how through empowerment her patients can exercise their freedom in choosing healthier lifestyles. Duquette believes that conventional medicine’s popularity and widespread acceptability is not permanent in regards to the future of healthcare in the U.S. She emphasizes that conventional western medicine primarily treats the symptoms of illnesses, not the underlying causes. This is where Kendra Duquette comes in, assessing the patient's environment, lifestyle, and nutritional choices to ultimately cure their illness and get them back to living a healthy life.
