Abstract
Dr. Joel Nilles creates customized plans to help patients achieve their individual health goals. By providing natural medical services, he focuses on a holistic practice of integrative medicine. This research will provide a brief history about the development of integrative medicine and its role in healthcare today. It will also elaborate on the training integrative practitioners must receive, the techniques they use to diagnose and treat, how insurance covers integrative medicine, and how Dr. Nilles became interested in integrative medicine. This research will include a synthesis of peer-reviewed literature related to integrative medicine. It will also consist of data from ethnographic interviews with Dr. Nilles and will include insight from an observation of a session with a client. Visual illustrations of techniques and treatments will be produced in combination with the qualitative data. Integrative medicine is a less invasive, more holistic approach to health and wellbeing. For someone who is daunted by prescriptions and procedures, or someone who simply does not feel that Western medicine is meeting their needs, integrative medicine can give patients a wide array of alternative, individualized healing modalities.
