Abstract
Racial profiling as defined by the American Civil Liberties Union is “the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin” (ACLU, 2023, p. 1). For this study, I formulated my own definition of racial profiling to characterize the discriminatory practices by school personnel of targeting students based on their race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin. The purpose of this research synthesis is to determine how racial profiling practices in a school setting affect students’ opportunity to learn. The research synthesis takes on a bottom-up research approach, where the search for research studies relevant ranged from general to specific in terms of data. To analyze the content of the research studies, four sections were determined: racial profiling in communities, racial profiling within the education system, school personnel practicing racial profiling, and the impact of racial profiling on students. The significance of this study is prevalent as the policies set in place to remove racial profiling or discrimination have not been effective and a change in direction must occur.
