Abstract
Presented as my senior project, this collection features poems accompanied by collage. The focus of my project was to create a coming-of-age experience for the reader and find a way for memoir, poetry, and collage to meet. A lot of the poems were written specifically for this project, but a few of them were written throughout my experience at Wesleyan. In order to add to the project, I wrote a few “reprises” to pair with the older poems I included to see how my writing and outlook on each issue had changed.
This collection is not only a love letter to every person I have been throughout my time at Wesleyan, but also a testament to how I have morphed into a new person. Writing about each stage of my life, from when I was really young to when I was at the cusp of graduation, revealed patterns that I hadn’t noticed before and gave me greater insight into how circumstances change us as well as other people.
Collage was something I knew needed to accompany each poem or short prose piece. The collection itself is a compilation of the moments of my life, and including some images that I took myself during those stages made the page more immersive and, I believe, made my poetry something people could contextualize and connect to.
The goal of my project was, ultimately, to be earnest and genuine. While many pieces were difficult to write (and often uncomfortable to read) the season of unpacking and repackaging my life through poetry and collage yielded results that I was proud of.
