Abstract

Nursing is experiencing unprecedented staffing shortages and an important factor impacting nurse retention is burnout. The American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation (2020) describes nurse burnout as a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that stems from work. During the global pandemic, nurses became even more emotionally exhausted leaving the nursing workforce damaged and unfulfilled. The American Nurses Association (ANA) indicates that there will be 200,000 nursing openings every year for the next 10 years. This means there will be shortages of nurses at every level of healthcare which will contribute negatively to patient outcomes, including mortality of patients. Finding ways in which nurses can remain vibrant and stave off burnout is critical. Because of the serious nursing shortage in healthcare systems nationwide, it is urgent that we prevent inevitable burnout. Identifying strategies for nurses to renew themselves is necessary because, without some sort of resolution patients will suffer. We are conducting a review of the literature surrounding the topic of combating nurse burnout. The goal of this review is to identify strategies that nurses use to renew themselves and remain fulfilled in their careers. Using the PRISMA technique to carry out a literature search, we are examining findings on effective ways nurses cope with stress in the ever-changing world of healthcare. The majority fo research focuses on the negative aspects of nursing such as fatigue, apathy, and mental illnesses in the nursing workforce; however, little research has been done on thriving as a nurse. Our review is currently in process.
