Abstract
This body of artworks consists of 6 works, all regarding similar themes of death, physical remains of photographs, fiber works, religion, and bones, the woman's role in heritage and inheritance, European immigration to the American South, connecting to one's ancestors through a Jungian view of archetypes- with phenotype as just one shared characteristic. In my senior spring I am taking Printmaking 1 as well as Special Individual Projects for my 3rd semester of glass. 5 of the 6 works are glass. The print “Stuck in the Past” is a self-portrait combining aspects of my grandfathers- cowboy hats from Texas on one side, and bones reminiscent of a house full of taxidermy on the other. The glass powder painting of the woman with the umbrella is of one of my family’s last remaining photographs from Italy. The glass powder painting of the flower girl is from my grandmother's grandmother’s wedding, 11 Jun 1925. An annoyed flower girl, bored of her assignment, exists in many lifetimes and families. The mobile includes glass powder paintings from many of my maternal female ancestors. The form of mobile inspires something dream-like. “Irish Chain” is the name of the quilt design in the artwork. Irish flowers are frit painted onto the first layer of quilt. The patchworks include flowers I often interacted with in Missouri growing up. The glass pillows have a lace design inspired by Maddalena’s (b. 1873) lace from Italy, which she brought with her to America. The lace piece is inspired by other laces my grandmother has inherited. Heirlooms have many lives with many people, most of which have died, which the bones holding it resemble. The rosary here I received from my grandmother shows the feminine side of Catholicism which underlines many of the lives of the portrayed women in “Remains.”
