Former Illinois Wesleyan University Assistant Professor of Nursing Mary Wright Reuther Herring, class of 1970, has been selected as the 2007 Distinguished Alumna for Nursing Excellence, an honor given annually to one alum who has demonstrated outstanding excellence in the fields of nursing practice, education and research. Herring will be recognized on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007. Herring is the president and owner of Healing Interventions, P.C. a clinical hypnosis service in Phoenix that has offered cliental hypnosis based on a scientific foundation and holistic perspective since 1999. Herring promotes hypnosis as a therapeutic tool for self-induced change in attitudes and behavior. Combining hypnosis with healthy living strategies, Herring assists her clients in achieving their personal goals, such as quitting smoking, managing pain and stress, and preparing for medical procedures. She has published numerous books and articles on alternative and conventional medicine and, in 2002, co-edited a volume titled Blackwell's Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Fast Facts for Medical Practice. After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan with a bachelor of science in nursing degree, Herring earned a master's degree from the University of Hawaii in 1974, and went on to earn certification in the areas of occupational health, hypnotherapy, and clinical aromatherapy. She taught nursing at IWU from 1974 to 1979. Since 1980, she has been a member of the nursing faculty at the University of Phoenix. The Arizona Valle del Sol Association of Occupational Health Nurses named her "Nurse of the Year'' in 1998. Herring is also a member of the American Nurses' Association, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and the American Holistic Nursing Association. Immediately following the brunch, Herring will deliver a speech titled "Finding Your Passion-Sharing Your Voice."
