Abstract

There is a long history of examining psychological variables and sport performance. However, there are not many studies to look across many sports at the same time to see if relationships differ between sports and different athletes. This study will investigate the nature of psychological variables that may be related with in-game sports performance in collegiate athletes on the Illinois Wesleyan varsity Swim and Baseball teams. The study will assess athletes’ levels of anxiety, depression, affect, and personality to determine if those factors are associated with improved or optimal sports performance as measured by real-world performance outcomes at IWU games and/or meets. This study aims to broaden and deepen our understanding of how these psychological variables may be related with elite levels of sports performance and to see if there are differences in the associations across different sports.
