Abstract

Many literary scholars that study pedagogy believe that young adult novels are not worthy of academic critique. They are often viewed as having juvenile characters and writing that results in a very shallow story. However, the characters and writing style are one of the most valuable assists to getting students' attention within the classroom. Some young adult novels can have valuable insights and should not be dismissed simply because they belong to the young adult genre. Young adult novels have academic value and should be taught at the collegiate level. This will be proven through a political analysis of Suzanne Collins’s series The Hunger Games to illustrate how thought provoking young adult literature can be. This analysis allows readers insight to the agency limitations in a capitalist, democratic society. This is important to advocate for because analyzing young adult literature in collegiate classes will get students reinterested in the humanities.
