Abstract

"I Can’t Take Myself Seriously" presents a selection of spoken word poetry that attempts to capture and convey my unique experience of this crazy world I am in the process of creating and discovering. This is personal and political work. By offering poems that tackle ugly realities such as coming to terms with my sexuality and feeling uneasy in my own body, my goal is for this project to be just as political as my existence in the world. Hopefully this piece will educate others on the reality of living in America as a political threat to the patriarchy. Though "I Can’t Take Myself Seriously" centers around life from my own perspective, it is also meant to be relatable to wider audiences, especially those who choose laughter over tears.
