Abstract

Our history classes teach us about individuals who have significantly impacted our lives somehow. We learn about those who challenged others and broke the boundaries of the past to create new changes in society. However, many individuals still need to be included in this conversation, many of whom are women. According to historian and author Bettany Hughes, out of 3,500 years of recorded history, only 0.5 is devoted to discussing women’s history. Hundreds of women have impacted the world we live in today by breaking norms, being a “first,” challenging society, and inventing something new. There are many more reasons why these women should be known, yet so many go unrecognized in our lives. My Project, Forgotten, focuses on women throughout history who are not talked about in our history or should have more recognition than what they have. Combining both my history and art degrees, I wanted to take this chance to highlight these women in digital design. Using a more modern approach to create a timeline and five spotlight posters, I wanted to present these women in a creative and aesthetic design to enhance the information being presented. Using typography and color as a large part of this project, I wanted to design a piece to make these individuals stand out. While these are not all the women forgotten throughout history, and some may know of a few, these are a few women left out of our history books.
