Abstract
This research reviews the current literature discussing school counseling programs and their effectiveness in school interventions. It investigates the types of school counseling programs implemented by school counselors and how these affect the effectiveness of interventions for students. The benefits and limitations of the programs reviewed are discussed, as are their efficacy in interventions. The reviewed literature offers a comprehensive look into what programs can work in a school setting to assist students to their fullest potential. Programs that utilize student and group counseling, the core curriculum, and responsive services demonstrate the highest level of support. Findings indicate that school counseling programs aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model predict significant outcomes across multiple domains. School counseling programs are data-driven and evaluated consistently, which displays greater improvement in student success. Ricks et al. (2020) provide research that programs and interventions are inseparable, which is significant in creating effective systems. These findings have implications for school counselors in supporting full implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs.
