George Wainwright was named the 2014 recipient of the Max L. Starkey Service Award, which recognizes outstanding service to the Illinois Wesleyan University community by a member of the University staff. President Richard F. Wilson made the announcement Aug. 22 at the annual Faculty-Staff Breakfast, a traditional beginning to the academic year. A 37-year employee of the University, Wainwright is manager of maintenance services at Illinois Wesleyan. In this position, Wainwright handles problems large and small concerning all of the physical structures across campus and other properties owned by the University. One nominator noted Wainwright’s “institutional knowledge of campus physical features is second to none, and this is well matched to his technical knowledge of how just about every single thing on campus functions.”

And now, this year’s clues…

  • As one of the nominators said: Some say done is good; but for our recipient it’s never done until it’s done right.
  • Our recipient’s first name, became a substitute for “God” when the church began levying fines for swearing and blasphemy in 16th Century England.
  • His first name is also a familiar one shared by science fiction writers, rock guitarists and country singers, actors, presidents and even the Sultan of Swat.
  • There’s a major leaguer (Cardinal’s Adam Wainwright) who shares our award winners last name, but he plays for the wrong team in the eyes of many of us.
  • The last name of our recipient is also synonymous with that of one of our founders (Rev. Cartwright).
  • A master trades person (wainwright) who often oversaw the work of wheelwrights, blacksmiths and painters, was known by the last name of our recipient and they also share a similar skill set.
  • Our recipient is a father who shares the same initials as the father of our country.
  • Returning from a trip a year ago, my wife, Pat, and I came home to find a pipe burst in our home and whom do you think we called to help bail us out? That’s right our recipient ….
