Abstract
It is often forgotten that during the 1890s and early 20th century, bicycling was one of the most popular sports in America and bicycle manufacturing was an important American industry. Illinois was at the epicenter of this bicycle boom. The state was home to nearly 100 manufacturers as well as some of the most important races in the world. The bicycle also played a role in furthering women’s rights and other social issues. In this lecture, Professor Sweet discusses his current sabbatical research on these topics.
